For CounsellorsWhat to Look for in a Clinical Supervisor (Beyond the Checklist)
Most advice on choosing a clinical supervisor starts and ends with credentials — and credentials matter. But two supervisors with identical qualifications can offer completely different experiences. Here's what's worth thinking about once the basics are covered.
Fit with your caseload, not just your modality.
A supervisor who's fluent in your theoretical orientation is useful.
A supervisor who's also sat with the specific weight of trauma, grief, or cross-cultural work — if that's where your clients are — often brings something more immediately useful than shared modality alone.
Whether you feel safe enough to be honest.
Good supervision isn't just case management.
It's a space to admit the session that went sideways, the client who triggers something in you, the moments you're not sure you handled well. If you find yourself performing competence rather than exploring it, that's worth naming.
Whether you're challenged, not just supported.
Warmth matters, but supervision that only ever validates isn't doing its job.
Look for a supervisor willing to ask the harder question.
Practical fit.
Format (individual or group), frequency, and whether online supervision suits how you like to reflect are all legitimate factors — not compromises.
