Counselling FAQs | Fields of Hope Counselling
What can counselling help with?

Counselling offers a safe, supportive space to explore a wide range of experiences: from anxiety, stress, and grief, to relationship issues, low self-esteem, life transitions, or feeling stuck. You don't need to be in crisis to reach out; this space is here for healing, reflection, and growth.

Do I need a referral to book?

You can book directly, no referral needed. Some people come to counselling through a GP or other health professional, but you're welcome to connect when you feel ready.

The exception is SIRA/CTP-funded counselling (for motor vehicle accident claims), which requires a referral from a GP, case manager, rehabilitation provider, or insurer, since a claim number and insurer details are needed to proceed under the CTP/SIRA scheme.

If you're hoping to access funded counselling through Victims Services NSW, you also don't need a referral from us, but you will need to apply directly with Victims Services and receive a Counselling Approval Letter before your first funded session. See the Victims Services Counselling page for details.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?

Medicare rebates are limited to services provided by psychologists, social workers, or occupational therapists under a Mental Health Care Plan. Counselling with a registered counsellor (ACA or PACFA member) sits outside that scheme.

Some private health funds (e.g. Bupa, Teacher's Health Fund, Medibank, HCF) may offer partial rebates, so check with your provider under your Extras policy. Please indicate on your intake forms if you have private health insurance.

How long are sessions and how much do they cost?

Most sessions run 50 to 60 minutes at $150. Extended 90-minute sessions are available at $225 where needed. Payment is processed automatically at the time of booking via Halaxy Auto Payment.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone's journey is different. Some people come for just a few sessions; others find ongoing support helpful. We'll talk together about what feels right for you.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes: everything you share is treated with care and confidentiality. The only exceptions are if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if legally required (e.g. a subpoena or mandatory reporting). See the Mandatory Reporting & Duty of Care page for full details.

What's the difference between a counsellor, psychologist, and psychiatrist?
  • Counsellors support people with emotional wellbeing, relationships, stress, grief, and personal growth.
  • Psychologists can diagnose mental health conditions and provide Medicare-funded therapy.
  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental illness and can prescribe medication.

Each plays a different role, and sometimes people work with more than one type of support.

How do online sessions work?

All sessions are conducted via Zoom. Once you book, you'll receive a confirmation email with your unique Zoom link. At your session time, click the link from your phone, tablet, or computer, no software download is required. We recommend a private, stationary, and quiet space, and ask that you join from a stationary, off-the-road location for safety.

Is telehealth counselling as effective as in-person?

Research consistently shows that online counselling can be just as effective as face-to-face sessions. Many clients find the comfort and convenience of their own environment actually enhances the experience. All the same care, confidentiality, and professional standards apply.

What do I need for an online session?

A stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone (smartphone, tablet, or laptop), and a private space where you won't be interrupted. Zoom is free and no account is needed to join.

What happens in the first session?

Our first session is a gentle start, a chance for you to share what's bringing you to counselling, explore your goals, and get a sense of whether we're a good fit. You're welcome to go at your own pace.

What is the cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule without charge. Cancellations within 24 to 48 hours incur 50% of the session fee; less than 24 hours or no-show incurs the full fee. See the Fees, Cancellation & Refund Policy for full details.

Do you charge for reports or subpoenas?

Yes. Written reports, letters, and subpoena compliance are charged separately from session fees, based on the time and complexity involved. Get in touch for a quote. See the Fees, Cancellation & Refund Policy for full details.

Are you a registered counsellor?

Yes: I'm registered at the highest membership tier with both the Australian Counselling Association (ACA Level 4) and PACFA (Clinical Member), with adherence to ethical guidelines, regular clinical supervision, and ongoing professional development.

What approaches do you use?

The counselling style is warm, person-centred, and tailored to your unique needs. Approaches include Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, trauma-informed practice, and Emotionally Focused Therapy, depending on what feels most helpful for you.
