What Is Clinical Supervision? | Fields of Hope Counselling

Supervision gets described in a lot of different ways depending on who's talking about it, which means a lot of practitioners walk in with expectations that don't quite match what's actually on offer. Worth being clear about both sides.

What Supervision Is

  • A space to think, not just report.

Good supervision isn't a checklist of "here's what happened this week" — it's a genuine collaborative process of reflecting on your clinical work, your reactions to it, and your development as a practitioner.

  • Clinical and ethical accountability.

Part of its function is making sure your practice stays safe, within scope, and ethically sound — with someone else's eyes on decisions you might otherwise make alone.

  • A place for the parts of the work that are hard to say elsewhere.

The case that's under your skin, the countertransference you're not proud of, the doubt about your own competence — supervision is built to hold these without judgment.

  • Professional development over time.

Not just problem-solving this week's caseload, but building your capacity, your theoretical grounding, and your sense of professional identity across years, not sessions.

What Supervision Isn't

  • Personal therapy.

Supervision may touch on how a case affects you personally, but it isn't a substitute for your own therapeutic support if you're carrying something that needs that kind of space.

  • A performance review.

Its purpose is development and safety, not evaluating you against a scorecard — though ethical and competence concerns are part of what it exists to catch.

  • Optional once you're experienced.

Ongoing supervision remains part of ethical practice at every career stage, not just early ones.

  • A place to only bring your polished, successful cases.

The sessions that went well are worth reflecting on too, but supervision earns its keep most in the cases that didn't go smoothly.

If your current sense of what supervision is for doesn't match this, that's worth naming — either with your existing supervisor, or in finding one whose approach actually fits what you need. Get in touch to enquire about supervision →
