Counselling Frequently Asked Questions
-
Counselling offers a safe, supportive space to explore a wide range of experiences — from anxiety, stress, and grief, to relationship issues, low self-esteem, life transitions, or feeling stuck. You don’t need to be in crisis to reach out; this space is here for healing, reflection, and growth.
-
Not at all — you can book directly, no referral needed. Some people come to counselling through a GP or other health professional, but you’re welcome to connect when you feel ready.
-
Counselling with a registered counsellor (e.g. ACA or PACFA member) isn’t currently covered under Medicare. Only services provided by psychologists, social workers, or occupational therapists (under a Mental Health Care Plan) are eligible for rebates.
Some private health funds (e.g. Bupa, Teacher’s Health Fund, Medibank & HCF) may offer partial rebates — feel free to check with your provider, if you have this available under your ‘Extras’ Policy.
When you make your first booking, please indicate that you have Private Health Insurance on your intake forms. -
Most sessions run for around 50 to 60 minutes. We can also tailor this depending on your needs and preferences.
-
Everyone’s journey is different. Some people come for just a few sessions, others find ongoing support helpful. We’ll talk together about what feels right for you.
-
Yes — everything you share is treated with care and confidentiality. The only exceptions are if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if legally required (e.g. a subpoena, mandatory reporting). If any of these situations arise, I’ll always talk with you about it.
-
Counsellors support people with emotional wellbeing, relationships, stress, grief, and personal growth.
Psychologists can diagnose mental health conditions and provide Medicare-funded therapy.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental illness and can prescribe medication.
Each plays a different role — sometimes people work with more than one type of support.

All sessions are conducted via Zoom. Once you book, you'll receive a confirmation email with your unique Zoom link. At the time of your session, simply click the link from your phone, tablet, or computer. No software download is required — Zoom runs in your browser. We recommend finding a private, stationary and quiet space where you feel comfortable speaking freely.
We will terminate a call/session if you are driving during a session. -
Research consistently shows that online counselling can be just as effective as face-to-face sessions. Many clients find the comfort and convenience of their own environment actually enhances the experience. All the same care, confidentiality, and professional standards apply.
-
A stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone (smartphone, tablet, or laptop), and a private space where you won't be interrupted. That's it — Zoom is free to use and no account is needed to join a session.
-
Our first session is a gentle start — a chance for you to share what’s bringing you to counselling, explore your goals, and get a sense of whether we’re a good fit. You’re welcome to go at your own pace.
-
Payment will be received at the time of the booking.
If you need to reschedule or cancel, I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less notice may incur a fee, as your session time has been set aside just for you.
